In his State of the Union address on January 27, 2010, President Obama announced a “National Export Initiative” (NEI) to help businesses, particularly small businesses and farmers, increase exports. Commerce Secretary Locke outlined the NEI in a February 7 speech, where he highlighted the administration’s efforts to expand trade advocacy, improve access to credit for small and medium sized businesses, and enforce international trade laws that help remove barriers that prevent U.S. companies from getting open and fair access to foreign markets. The President formally launched the NEI on March 11 when he spoke at the Export-Import Bank’s annual conference, “Exports Live!” and signed Executive Order 12870. The Secretary of State will be part of the newly created Export Promotion Cabinet, along with the Secretaries of Treasury and Commerce, senior White House advisors, and the heads of key U.S. economic and trade agencies. Department officials will continue to be engaged in interagency coordination of export promotion efforts. For more information, see the resources below.
