The United States will participate in the “Global Multi-stakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance” to be held on April 23 and 24, 2014. We appreciate the effort of the Brazilian government, in coordination and consultation with the Internet community worldwide, to convene this critical conversation and look forward to participating in meaningful discussion.

The United States believes that the meeting presents an opportunity to advance the global community’s understanding of Internet governance and promote its evolution toward a more inclusive structure if: (1) the agenda is developed in a truly multi-stakeholder fashion; (2) participation at the meeting is broad and inclusive; and (3) any follow on activity is guided by, and ultimately supportive of, the multi-stakeholder system rather than an intergovernmental mechanism of centrally imposed regulation or mandates.

In this spirit, the United States has accepted the invitation from the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil to participate along with governments and other stakeholders in the High-Level Multi-stakeholder Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the overall strategy of the meeting and fostering the involvement of the international community. U.S. Ambassador Daniel Sepulveda will represent the United States at the meetings of the High-Level Multi-stakeholder Committee. Ambassador Sepulveda will collaborate closely with other U.S. officials including Assistant Secretary Lawrence Strickling from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration of the Department of Commerce and Christopher Painter, the Secretary of State’s Coordinator for Cyber Issues.
