U.S. Secretary Gutierrez and Mexican Secretary Garcia De Alba Honored Hewlett-Packard And Patronato Pro Mazahua With Good Partner Award

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and Mexican Secretary of Economy Sergio Garcia de Alba today announced Hewlett-Packard Mexico and Patronato Pro-Zona Mazahua as the winners of the 2005 Partnership for Prosperity Good Partner Award. The Good Partner Award recognizes the role of the private sector in both countries in advancing social and economic development in Mexico.

"I’m pleased to honor these two U.S. and Mexican companies with the Partnership for Prosperity Good Partner Award for their efforts in helping strengthen relations between the United States and Mexico," said Gutierrez. "Both companies answered the call of Presidents Bush and Fox to engage in corporate stewardship and get involved in helping people and communities in need."

Hewlett-Packard received the award for their help in creating 250 community learning centers in Mexico, promoting environmental stewardship (ISO-14001 certified), and supporting technology-based student exchange programs. Patronato Pro-Zona Mazahua was honored for providing education/training, health, micro-finance, and environmentally-friendly services in the Mazahua indigenous zone in Mexico.

Other finalists included Coca Cola, Cemex, FEMSA, Grupo Modelo, Merck, Delphi, Pepsi Cola and Peñoles Mining.

The Good Partner Award is given under the auspices of the U.S.-Mexico Partnership for Prosperity (P4P) initiative, created by Presidents Bush and Fox in September 2001.

The goal of the Partnership is to boost the well-being of Mexican citizens in regions where economic growth has lagged. P4P has provided the framework for many successes in Mexico:

  • The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) has provided almost $600 million in financing for new projects;
  • Peace Corps volunteers now work in the areas of information technology, small business development, and science. The cost of sending remittances from the U.S. to Mexico has fallen by more than half;
  • USAID’s Training, Internships, and Education Scholarships (TIES) program brings together universities in both countries to create sustainable development programs, including rural Mexico.
  • The Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of the Treasury are working on a series of initiatives to improve access to housing materials, low-cost construction, primary and secondary mortgage markets, and developer financing and to modernize building codes.

The U.S. Departments of State, Commerce, and Treasury and their Mexican counterpart agencies chose Hewlett-Packard and Patronato Pro-Zona as the winners of the Good Partner Award for their contributions to sustainable economic development, exemplary employment practices, and innovative ventures.

The U.S.-Mexico Partnership for Prosperity complements and enhances the efforts of the trilateral U.S.-Mexico-Canada Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP). With today’s inauguration of the SPP North American Competitiveness Council, the P4P will coordinate ever more closely with this trilateral initiative.
