TDA Signs Grant for E-Government Project in Kyrgyzstan
Press release issued by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency Earlier today, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Kyrgyzstan signed a $246,800 grant agreement to fund a feasibility study on the development of an electronic government (e-government) program. The Government of Kyrgyzstan is interested in e-government as a way to deliver services in a more efficient manner, using up-to-date technology and interactive internet-based operations. TDA Director Thelma J. Askey and Kyrgyz Minister of Foreign Affairs Askar Aitmatov signed the grant agreement in a ceremony at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel, during the visit of Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev to Washington, D.C. "Today's signing is an indication of our desire for closer relations between our countries and to assist Kyrgyzstan in planning an e-government system based on modern technology and best practices," noted Director Askey. "Kyrgyzstan has been a strong ally in the fight against terrorism, and our goal is to broaden our bilateral relationship in the economic sphere as well." The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in developing and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on economic sectors that represent significant U.S. export potential. By funding various forms of technical assistance, training grants, feasibility studies, orientation visits, and business workshops, TDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets.
