Biography

Douglas C. Hengel Deputy Assistant Secretary, Energy, Sanctions and Commodities Term of Appointment: 10/2007 to present

Mr. Hengel is Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy, Sanctions and Commodities, a position he assumed in October 2007. In that capacity his responsibilities include formulating and advancing U.S. international energy security policy, including relations with the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris. Mr. Hengel also chairs the Standing Committee on Long-Term Cooperation at the IEA. From 2006-2007 he was Executive Assistant to the Undersecretary for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs. A career Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Hengel has served at U.S. Embassies in Prague, Lima, Rome and Caracas, and was Deputy Chief of Mission in Bratislava from 1999-2002 where he served as Charge d’Affaires for 21 months. He has also served as Director of the Office of Southern European Affairs and in the Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization. Mr. Hengel has a BA from Colgate University and a Masters in Public Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton.
