G8 Sea Island Summit Education Web Site Launched

Savannah, GA –Georgia students can now logon to learn more about the world around them at a new education program Web site launched on Tuesday, April 20th.  The G8 Summit education program Web site, which features bright colors and fun facts, provides an interactive learning environment for teachers and students.  Information on the site includes facts about each G8 country and leader, as well as access to the national anthems, common phrases, currency, and G8 Summit cartoons.

“The Web site is a great way to get young people involved in learning,” said Barry Bennett, Director of Communications for the Sea Island Summit Planning Organization. “It not only generates interest in other countries, and how important it is for the United States to interact with them, but also reinforces the use of technology in the classroom and daily life.”

The education program site is accessible at www.g8usa.gov/kids.html or through the Sea Island Summit main site at www.g8usa.gov.

The site serves as a tool for teachers and parents, and offers lesson plans broken into grade levels (k-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). The Georgia Council on Economic Education created the lesson plans, and the Summit Host Committee mailed hard copies of the plans to all public and private schools in Georgia, as well as 200 American schools abroad.

The cartoons on the Web site were created with the assistance of the Cartoon Network, a subsidiary of Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc.  There are three G8 Summit specific Animate Your World: Shaping Character programs, designed for students in the fifth through twelfth grades.  The cartoons highlight the G8 leaders, their countries, and the environment.

“It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and it encourages curiosity about the world,” Bennett added.

The Sea Island Summit will be held June 8-10.
