G8 Summit Volunteers Begin Training
Georgia Residents to Help with International Event

Savannah - The Sea Island Summit Planning Organization began training volunteers on Saturday, May 1. More than 300 Georgia residents have signed up as volunteers for the G8 Summit, and event organizers are hosting several training sessions to give everyone an orientation to the G8 Summit.

“We are extremely grateful for the huge turnout,” said Heather Safrit, Chief Volunteer Coordinator for the Summit. “Our mission today is to orient everyone here about the Summit.”

The orientation session began Saturday morning with a welcome from SISPO Chief of Staff, David Vennett. The remainder of the morning included presentations by various event officials. Volunteers broke into subgroups, where they learned more about the Summit divisions for which they will be working.

“We’re fortunate to have so many local people offer their time and commitment to the Summit,” said Vicki Rich, of the Summit press staff. “They’ve signed up for a lot of work, and are very enthusiastic.”

The one-day training session included more than 100 volunteers. Each volunteer has been assigned to work with a specific division of the Summit. More training sessions will be held throughout the month.

The 2004 Sea Island Summit will be held on June 8-10. Volunteers will help with various logistical and delegation staff needs.
