World Food Prize 2004

The World Food Prize recognizes the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. Each year, more than 4,000 institutions and organizations around the world are invited to nominate candidates for The Prize.

President George W. Bush is strongly committed to the fight against hunger, creating the Initiative to End Hunger in Africa and supporting extensive famine relief efforts in the Horn and southern Africa. In the President's February 2003 radio address, he stated, “Millions are facing great affliction, but with our help, they will not face it alone. America has a special calling to come to their aid and we will do so with the compassion and generosity that have always defined the United States.”  In FY2003 alone, the United States, the world's leading food aid donor, provided approximately $2.4 billion for food aid programs around the world.
