Middle East and North Africa Programs
DRL currently supports over 50 democracy, human rights, and labor programs in the Broader Middle East and North Africa. Current funding for DRL programs including non-HRDF resources in BMENA exceeds $203 million. Program topics include women's empowerment, training of journalists, political participation, strengthening rule of law, youth programs and supporting the observation of prisons.
One regional program develops and supports independent media and democratic development in Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. The program encourages public engagement on social issues, with a focus on regional exchange of best practices. In partnership with broadcast journalists from the region, program participants develop television programs examining each country's response to shared social problems.
