DRL currently supports 18 democracy, human rights, and labor programs in Europe. Current funding for DRL programs in Europe exceeds $15 million. Program topics include civil society empowerment, legal advocacy, forensic investigations, and strengthening political processes.
One regional DRL program focuses on forensic investigations in the Balkans. DRL's partner assists authorities in the exhumation, examination, and identification of missing persons using DNA identification processes. The organization supports civil society initiatives that inform, empower, and create networks among families of missing persons. Also, the program coordinates with regional governments and independent institutions in the Balkans to build local institutional capacity to address issues of missing persons.
