Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award

Barry F. Lowenkron, Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor
Statement Congratulating Award Recipient Sonia Pierre
Washington, DC
November 17, 2006

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the Department of State is delighted that the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center has recognized Ms. Sonia Pierre for her selfless efforts to defend the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent. Ms. Pierre is a courageous human rights defender who has devoted her life to ensuring justice for others. The United States stands firmly behind human rights defenders worldwide-extraordinary men and women who, often at risk to themselves-advance the cause of freedom. The Dominican Republic is a dynamic democracy and we encourage the government to intensify its work to eliminate discrimination. We warmly congratulate Ms. Pierre on this award and commend her commitment to ensuring that all members of society enjoy the freedoms of democratic nations.
