Earth Day International Art Contest

The Department's Bureau of Oceans, Environment and Science took advantage of Earth Day 2007 to highlight U.S. engagement and leadership on environmental issues by sponsoring an international art contest through U.S. embassies around the world. Winner Earth Day 2007 Art: Womens Face by Mariya Nikolova, 15 years old, from Kazanluk, Bulgaria.

All embassies and consulates were invited to arrange a national contest for children (10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) in their host country. U.S. citizens were not included in this program as the objective was to encourage public awareness in other countries about the U.S. commitment to the environment.

Some 40 U.S. embassies and consulates received thousands of art works of many different types. They selected their national winners and sent about 100 photos of the best art works produced to Washington to compete for the top international recognition.

Judges from different State bureaus dealing with art, the environment and public diplomacy reviewed the works and, after careful consideration, chose a winner from each of the three age groups. The winning artists from Belarus, Bulgaria and the Republic of Korea are present with us today. The judges also chose to recognize two additional works they found to be worthy of noting, from Eritrea and from Nicaragua.
