International Fund for Refugee Women and Children

The International Fund for Refugee Women and Children Logo [State Dept Images]

The International Fund for Refugee Women and Children (the fund) is a public/private partnership supporting refugee relief efforts for innocent victims of conflict from around the world, such as in the West Bank and Gaza, from Darfur (Sudan), Burma and in Jordan, wherever refugees are seeking refuge. The Fund complements ongoing good works internationally and brings together private donors and the U.S. Government to help drive additional support to these areas by welcoming contributions through the U.S. Department of State. Private and corporate donations will be directed to support relief for refugees caught up in existing humanitarian crises and to implementing partners already working on the ground with the Department of State.

Help Is on the Way - Just in Time

The Fund is intended to help answer the call of all Americans for a mechanism through which the U.S. Government and the public can work together to alleviate the suffering of refugees around the world. Generous Americans everywhere often see critical humanitarian disasters unfold and want to know how they can help. By supporting projects to protect innocent civilians, especially women and children, donors also will promote good will between the people of the United States and people afflicted by violent conflict, civil unrest, war, or other horrible circumstances.

Goals and Priorities

The Fund aims to support practical projects and activities for refugee women and children to provide protection, basic education, livelihood skills and vocational training, to build self-reliance, and other self-sustaining skills. Support is needed to help conflict victims rebuild their lives. While the initial target groups for the Relief Fund's projects will be in Darfur (Sudan), West Bank and Gaza, and Jordan, the Fund's web site also provides the opportunity to direct donations to humanitarian relief in Lebanon through a link to the ongoing U.S.-Lebanon Partnership Fund for Lebanon. In addition, the Fund may be directed to help refugees as new crises emerge and new populations in need are identified.

Women and Children Suffer

Support through the International Fund for Refugee Women and Children will be directed to pressing humanitarian needs for the most vulnerable. Refugee women and children commonly need special protection against sexual and physical abuse and exploitation, separation from families, deprivation of education, forcible recruitment, as well as protection against sexual discrimination in the delivery of goods and services, and other forms of gender-based violence. The Fund will also direct donations to projects to provide vocational training, basic education, human rights education, small business development, job skills training, and literacy. Gifts supporting such projects for women will help whole countries to stabilize and reconstruct their country and will demonstrate the goodwill of the American people globally.

Tax Deductibility of Contributions

Contributions to the Department of State for this International Fund for Refugee Women and Children may qualify for the charitable contribution deduction as permitted by law for federal income, estate, and gift tax purposes in the United States. Donors should consult their accountants or lawyers for advice in this area.
