The Department of State is working to advance the human rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people as part of our comprehensive human rights policy and as a priority of our foreign policy. Currently, 76 countries criminalize consenual same-sex conduct.[1] Around the world, members of the LGBT community continue to face violence and persecution because of who they are and who they love; in some countries the “crime” of being LGBT carries a penalty of death.
