In February 2012 after several weeks of protests, the first democratically-elected president of the Maldives resigned, describing his resignation as forced by the military. Sporadic violent protests and debate over the timing of the next round of presidential elections followed.
CSO supports the U.S. Embassy in Colombo’s efforts to encourage a peaceful political reconciliation and respect for Maldivian democratic institutions by deploying two staff members to act as the United States government’s representatives on the ground in the Maldives.
