*INCLE: International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement Funds
**PREACT: Partnership for Regional East African Counter Terrorism
Tanzania occupies a strategic position on the African continent. It shares borders with eight countries, serves as a link between Eastern and Southern Africa and has a large Indian Ocean coastline. While Tanzania has witnessed impressive recent progress in economic growth and political stability, it faces significant challenges in the rule of law sector, notably in combating illegal trafficking and corruption. Moreover, the terrorist attack against the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam in 1998 highlights the continuing threat of terrorism.
The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is partnering with the Government of Tanzania to develop a forensics laboratory. Through the provision of equipment and technical assistance, this laboratory will help improve the Tanzanian Police Service’s capacity to identify explosive materials, perform crime scene investigations, gather evidence, and analyze fingerprints, competencies that will help bring criminals to justice and prevent criminal acts, including terrorism.
