To be proactive, the superintendent should prepare a media response for members of the school community concerning any accident. In most schools, this will not entail a response to radio, TV or the press but rather to the school community via a school newsletter or general letter to all parents. It is best to inform the school community to the facts of any accident or death rather than letting rumors run rampant. By being proactive and having a plan on how to respond to accidents and deaths, the school will not be making reactive mistakes in the heat of a crisis.
