School Transportation Safety - Hiring Procedures for Drivers

  • If a school is responsible for transportation with school-owned vans or buses, then the school should be sure to do security checks of all drivers. It is suggested that a check of each driver's driving record, police record, etc. be part of the interview and hiring process.
  • If the school uses an outside company to provide transportation, then the school should request that the company provide such records of all drivers. If the company does not want to provide such information, it might be best to look for other companies.
  • Students are vulnerable off campus; it is suggested that strict rules and regulations for all drivers are established by the school. These rules and regulations should be printed and given to each driver after an orientation at the beginning of the year. These rules and regulations should be kept in each vehicle; shorter orientations can be given periodically during the year.
