Westwood International School was founded in May 1988 under the sponsorship of the British and American governments and several local companies in collaboration with the Botswana Ministry of Education. Its educational program extends from kindergarten through grade 13. The school year, beginning in January and ending in December, comprises 3 trimesters: mid-January to mid-April, mid-May to early August, and mid-September to early December.
Organization: The international curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students transferring to or from U.S., British, or international schools abroad. The elementary school was authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program in 2005, following the school’s authorization to offer the IB Diploma Program in 2002. The school is currently phasing-in the IB Middle Years Program and, in Years 10 and 11 offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Program. Textbooks and resources are sourced internationally to meet the demands of the international programs offered, the bulk being ordered from the USA and UK. The school offers a range of Student Support Services including: Learning Support, English Second Language Support, Counseling Support and Career & College Guidance. The School is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.
Faculty: In the 2011 school year, there are 51 faculty members.
Enrollment: During the 2011 school year, enrollment was 430.
Facilities: Westwood is located on a custom-designed 4.6-hectare campus with 37 classrooms, a library, 2 recently upgraded computer centers, and a modern office building. A school auditorium with sound and lighting completes the buildings. The school offers a fully equipped competitive swimming pool and a learner pool, along with basketball and tennis courts, as well as 2 large playing fields for soccer, softball, cricket and athletics practices and matches. The classrooms at the site are modern in design, well equipped, air-conditioned and internet-connected. There is a comprehensive after-school program offering a wide range of sporting, creative, cultural and community-service related activities.
Finances: For the 2011 academic year 88% of the School's income derives from tuition fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: grades Reception-Year 2: Pula 41,700 (USD 6,318.18),; Year 3-6: Pula 44,100 (USD 6,681.82); Year 7: Pula 53,700 (USD 8,136.36); Year 8-9: Pula 64,200 (USD 9,727.27); Year 10-11: Pula 70,500 (USD 10,681.82); and Year 12-13 : Pula 72,300 (USD 10,954.55). For new students, there is a one-time, nonrefundable fee equivalent to one term (1/3) of the appropriate grade tuition fee. There is also a testing fee. ESL and Special Needs fees apply where relevant at the rate of Pula 150 per session.
