The American School of Yaounde is an independent, non-profit, co-educational educational institution offering a college preparatory program from nursery through grade 12 for English-speaking students. Admission to the American School of Yaounde is open on a non-discriminatory basis to all students, regardless of race, creed, color, gender, religion, national origin, ethnic background, or philosophy. The mission of the American School of Yaounde is to ensure that all students achieve high academic success, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and become responsible and compassionate global citizens prepared for their next stage of life; gained through an enriched American curriculum and offered in a challenging, secure, and diverse environment. The school year is comprised of four terms extending from late August to late October, early November to January, late January to early April, and early April to early June with 180 days of instruction.
Organization: The School is accredited by both the Council of International Schools in Europe and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. ASOY is an active member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). The school is governed by an 8 member school board elected by the parent Association.
Curriculum: The educational program at ASOY consists of an enriched American curriculum that reflects the international character of students within the environment of Cameroon. All students are enrolled in English, science, mathematics, social studies, French, art, music, PE, health, and IT. Instruction is in English and French is taught at all grade levels. Thirteen Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in the high school. English as a Second Language (ESL) support is available for students in grades 1 through 12 and a Learning Support Program is offered for students with mild learning and/or other difficulties.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 20 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members, including 13 U.S. citizens, 5 host-country nationals, and 7 third-country nationals. All staff members are fully certified and registered with their respective country’s educational department, with the majority trained and certified in the U.S. The school also employs a fulltime librarian, nurse, and school counselor.
Enrollment: At the end of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 183. Of the total, 45 were U.S. citizens, 40 host-country nationals and 98 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 13 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 32 were dependents of private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The campus is located on a three and a half acre site near the center of Yaounde and consists of 20 classrooms, two computer labs, science lab, 16,000-volume multi-media library, learning support center, college resource center, and the Parrot’s Canteen. Sports facilities include 4 tennis courts and a covered basketball court, swimming pool, kiddie pool, soccer field, and playground for younger students. The school consists of four sections: the Early Childhood Program (nursery-kindergarten), Elementary School (Grades 1-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and High School (Grades 9-12). The school also maintains a recreation center serving ASOY families and other community members.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, about 95% of the School’s income derives from tuition. The annual tuition rates are as follows: N: $3,852; PK3: $4,440; PK4: $5,440; Kdg.: $10,220; grades 1-5: $12,900; grades 6-8: $13,655; and grades 9-12: $14,180. ESL supplement: $1,500, a capital levy fee for nursery and PK students: $3,000 and for Kdg. Through grade 12: $3,000. Transportation by school bus (optional) is CFA750,000. There is a one-time registration fee of $500. Annual lunch fees (optional) are: Nursery-PK 3/4: CFA 300,000; Kdg.-grade 5: CFA400,000; grades 6-12: CFA500,000. Boarding facilities for children in grades 6-12: $12,000. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars, with some in CFA).
