The International Community School of Abidjan, founded in 1972, is a nonprofit, independent, coeducational day school offering an American-style curriculum from kindergarten through grade 11 for children of all nationalities. The school year that typically extends from late August to late June is divided into two semesters.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors. 7 members on the Board are elected by the Parents' Association and 2 are appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. Membership in the Parents' Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.
Curriculum: The School follows an American curriculum that is modified to meet local needs and opportunities. French, the official language of the Côte d'Ivoire, is taught at all grade levels. English-as-a-Second-Language is required of all non-English speakers until their English is competitive with that of native speakers. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, the faculty is comprised of 15 full-time and 3 part-time teachers and specialists with 66% holding Master’s Degrees. The faculty represents a diverse group of qualified teachers including 7 US citizens, 5 host country nationals, and 6 third country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 106 students. Of the total, 8 are US citizens and the remaining members of the student body represent 29 other nations. Official US dependents are not currently allowed in Côte d’Ivoire.
Facilities: ICSA is housed in a very large residential villa complex that is located in the Riviera III section of Abidjan. The school complex is composed of 3 two-story buildings, including administrative offices, 10 classrooms with a capacity of 10-15 students each, a science lab, a middle school science room, special classrooms for ESOL and French instruction, a library/information technology center, rooms for art and music, and a canteen/assembly area. The campus is located on land that measures approximately 5000 square meters and includes adjacent space for playing soccer and volleyball.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, approximately 95% of the School’s income derives from tuition fees. The tuition rates are as follows: Kdg: $6,250; grades 1-6: $12,500; grades 7-8: $12,900, and grades 9-11: $13,500. There is a one-time capital development fee of $5,000 payable by each family.
