The Banjul American Embassy School (BAES), founded in 1984, is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from Preschool through grade 8 for English-speaking students of all nationalities. The school year extends from late August to mid-June with 180 days of instruction.

Organization: The Board of Directors, consisting of 7 members, each serve on year terms. The Banjul American Embassy School Association elects 6 of the Board members and the 7th is appointed by the U.S. Chief of Mission. The director is a non-voting, ex-officio member. Parents, legal guardians, the director, and teachers are members of the Association.

Curriculum: The curriculum and teaching methodology are those of traditional U.S. public schools. All instruction is in English. The core subjects of language arts, math, science and social studies are augmented by specialist instructions in art, computer, French, music and physical education. The School is a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 6 full-time and 2 part-time faculty members including 2 U.S. citizens, 2 host-country nationals and 4 third-country nationals. The majority of the staff are trained and certified in the U.S., Canada or the U.K and undergo continual professional development.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 75 (PK-8), including 20 U.S. citizens (3 USG), 50 third–country nationals, and 5 host-country nationals.

Facilities: The School is located in a quiet residential area in Bakau. It has 4 buildings, which include 13 classrooms, a library, a computer laboratory, an art room, and a science laboratory. Recreation facilities include 2 playgrounds, a multipurpose hard-court, and a small soccer pitch. Plans are underway to build a new facility within the next three years.

Finances: In the 2009-2010 school year, about 90% of the School's income will derive from tuition and other fees. Annual tuition rates will be as follows: PK: $3,750; Kdg.-Grade 5: $7,800; Grades 6-8: $9,000;. A one-time school development fee of $2,100 is payable upon enrollment of each new student and a $200 application fee. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
