The Lincoln Community School (LCS) is a private, nonprofit, college preparatory day school which offers educational programs from pre-school (age 3) through grade 12. The School, established in 1968, is located in the cosmopolitan West African city of Accra. The school is developing into a center of excellence in the region, with strong professional development programs for its teachers and serving as a regional site for teacher workshops. The school year comprises 4 academic quarters, with the first beginning mid-August and the last ending in mid-June.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors. Members of the Lincoln Community School’s Parent Association elect 6 directors for a two-year term and 3 directors are appointed.
Curriculum: The School is international in both population (50+ nations represented) and philosophy with an emphasis on inquiry and problem solving. It is designed to be appropriately challenging, and to allow a smooth transition into other international schools. LCS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, authorized to offer all three levels of the IB program. These three levels of the IB Program guide the curriculum: the Primary Years Program (PS–grade 5), the Middle Years Program (grade 6-10) and the IB Diploma Program (grades 11-12). Special classes in art, music, physical education, theater, technology and French are offered. English as an additional language (EAL) and Learning Support Services are available, but families who may need these programs are advised to consult with the registrar about possible limitations. LCS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization. It is a member of both the Council of International Schools and the Association of International Schools in Africa.
Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are 83 international educators from 22 countries, many with advanced degrees and all qualified to teach in their assigned subject areas. Classes are normally limited to 20 students. There are also teaching assistants in all elementary school grade levels and in several secondary school subject areas.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 559 students from 63 different countries.
Facilities: School facilities are air conditioned with 65 classrooms including 3 art rooms, 5 science labs, 3 technology labs, 2 music rooms, a visual and performing arts center, junior and senior school libraries, an early childhood center, a world language center and office space for guidance and administration. Sports facilities include a multipurpose hall, playground, a multipurpose court, a climbing wall, 2 fields and a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a large gymnasium, a stage, and dressing room facilities. Playground space includes 2 grassy playing fields, 2 sandy fields with recreational apparatus and a large playground with a multipurpose court. Lincoln Gardens was developed and maintained by LCS students.
Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, the School’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $9,010; PK: $11,185; kdg.: $15,660; grades 1-5: $16,100; grades 6-8: $17,100; grades 9-10: $18,020; and grades 11-12: $19,360. There is a one-time nonrefundable registration fee of $6,500 for kdg.- grade 12. The registration fee for PS and PK is $1,500 with the balance of $5,000 to be paid when the student advances to kindergarten. An $850/student capital levy is payable each year for all returning students and an application fee of $125 is charged upon admission. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
