Rabat American School is an independent, coeducational school, which offers an American educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1962. The academic year is three trimesters extending from the middle of August to the middle of June.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Trustees elected for 2-year terms by the Rabat American School Association, the sponsors of the school. Membership is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.
Curriculum: The curriculum is highly academic and similar to that of U.S. private schools. Instruction is in English, and the International Baccalaureate program is offered for students in grades 11-12. French and Arabic are taught as foreign languages. Desktop publishing, economics, computer science, physical education, yearbook/literary magazine, Moroccan studies, drama, music, art, and student services are included in the curriculum as electives. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 53 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. Of these, 31 are U.S. citizens, 6 are host-country nationals, and 21 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 418 (PK-grade 5: 195; grades 6-8: 103; and grades 9-12: 120). Of the total, 93 were U.S. citizens, 123 were host-country nationals, and 202 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 62 were dependents of U. S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 20 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 11 of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School is housed on a campus of 8 acres with nine major buildings, including an auditorium, two library/media centers, a cafeteria, separate secondary and elementary classroom areas, a 25-meter swimming pool with supporting facilities, a gymnasium, and field spaces for basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer. There are specialized facilities for computer science, art, and music.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, about 98% of the School's income derives from tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK (half-day): $4,465; PK (full-day): $8,370; Kdg. (full day) $11,995; grades l-5: $14,690; grades 6-8: $17,085; and grades 9-12: $17,205. There is a one-time registration fee of $7,500 payable on enrollment, beginning with kindergarten. There is a bus fee for round-trip $810 and one-way $695, and an application fee of $550, deductible from tuition fees. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars or in Moroccan dirhams for Moroccan citizens only. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars and in Moroccan dirhams at a fixed rate.)
