2008-2009

The International School of Tanganyika, Ltd. (IST), established in 1963, is a private, coeducational day school, which offers a full educational program for pupils from the age of 3 to pre-university. A child must be 3 years of age before September 1st to be admitted to the Early Childhood program. The school year begins in mid-August and the first semester ends in December. The second semester starts in January and ends by mid-June. IST maintains a reputation as one of the leading international educational institutions on the African continent.

Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors, elected for 3-year terms of office by parents of pupils of the School, all of whom are eligible to vote and to hold office. The Director reports to the Board. There is one principal and vice principal for each of the campuses: Elementary and Secondary.

Curriculum: IST is a IB World School. The Elementary School (EC 1-5) teaches the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. The Secondary School consists of grades 6-12. Grades 6-10 follows the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Students in their last two years of high school take the IB diploma program, a college preparation course of study. The school is a center for PSAT, SAT and TOEFL testing. IST provides ESL services to students through grade 10. Learning services are also available to qualified students but assistance is limited and does not extend beyond grade 10. IST is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 111 faculty members including 35 U.S. citizens, 5 host-country nationals, and 71 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 985. Of the total, 104 were U.S. citizens, 205 were host-country nationals, and 676 were third-country nationals representing 53 countries. Of the U.S. enrollment, 34 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees and 70 were dependents of private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School is situated on two campuses. The Elementary School campus consists of 35 classrooms, 2 science labs, 2 computer rooms, a music room, an art room, an auditorium, a drama room, a library, an audio visual room, a swimming pool and an athletic field. The Secondary School campus, located a few miles away, consists of 31 classrooms, 7 science laboratories, a library, 2 art rooms, 3 computer rooms, an audio visual theatre, a multipurpose hall/gymnasium, a music and drama centre, swimming and diving pools, and a sports field.

Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, tuition and other fees generate the majority of the School’s income. The current fees are as follows: EC1-3: $9,500; grades 1-5: $11,000; grades 6-8: $13,500; grades 9-10: $14,500 and grades 11-12: $18,500. The current capital fee charged to all new parents is $5,000 and there is a $1,000 maintenance fee per child, a $100 alumni fee and a $500 family deposit. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
