The Harare International School (HIS), founded in 1992, offers an English-medium comprehensive education from an Early Childhood Program through grade 12 to students of the international expatriate community in Harare. The mission of the School is as follows: Harare International School teaches the personal values, academic qualities and sense of responsibility needed for life-long learning, community service and world citizenship through educational programs that are relevant, challenging and engaging.

Organization: HIS is an independent, international school administered by a 7-member Board of Directors. 5 of the members are elected and 2 are U.S. Embassy representatives.

Curriculum: The educational program is modeled along North American and International Baccalaureate Organization guidelines. The achievement standards of the academic core curriculum in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies are designed to equip students with the skills and content knowledge necessary for successful transition to other international schools worldwide and for reentry into the educational systems of each student’s home country. HIS is an authorized IB World School, offering both the Primary Years Program and the IB Diploma Program. The first IB examinations were offered in May 2006. HIS is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 59 faculty members, including 26 U.S. citizens, 17 host-country nationals and 16 third-country nationals. Specialists are provided in the areas of music, physical education, French, Spanish, computers, learning support services and English-as-a-second language. The average teaching experience of the faculty is 10 years. All hold credentials in their home country.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 420 students, including 74 U.S. citizens, 82 host-country nationals and 264 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 29 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 45 of private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School consists of 14 buildings on 21 acres of beautiful land in Mt. Pleasant. The elementary facility consists of 14 classrooms, a library, an art room, a computer lab, a music room, two outdoor playing courts, a playground and six faculty offices. The middle and high schools have 23 classrooms, 4 of which are fitted as science labs, 2 computer labs, an art center and a cafeteria. The physical education facility houses a first-rate gymnasium, a multipurpose room, a fitness center, a classroom and shower/changing facility. A performing arts center houses a 700-seat theatre, music and drama classrooms, music practice rooms, and support facilities for the theatre including makeup/changing rooms and a stagecraft workshop.

Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, annual tuition rates are as follows: Early Childhood 1 Program (3 year olds): $5,500; Early Childhood 2: $5,500; Kdg.-grade 5: $12,500; grades 6-8: $14,000; and grades 9-11: $17,100; and grade 12: $17,300. One-time registration fees are: Kdg.-grade 8: $3,000 and grades 9-12: $4,000. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
