The Surabaya International School is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool (age 3 by first of November) through grade 12. The School, founded in 1971, is established under Indonesian law with the status of a foundation (Yayasan). The school year comprises 4 quarters extending approximately from early August to mid-October, mid-October to mid-December, mid-January to mid-March, and mid-March to early June.

Organization: According to Indonesian law, the governance of the School has recently been revised. The Yayasan operates with a seven-member Board of Patrons, nominated by the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School, a four-member Board of Managers, and a single person Board of Supervisors.

Curriculum: The curriculum and materials are U.S. with modifications so that all students may return to their own countries or join other international schools with a minimum of academic displacement. The School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 33 staff members, including 22 U.S. citizens, 3 host-country nationals, and 8 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 269 (PS-grade 12). Of the total, 25 were U.S. citizens, 105 were host-country nationals, and 139 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 19 were dependents of U.S. business and foundation employees and 6 of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School has 50 air-conditioned classrooms, 4 computer laboratories, a library, a gymnasium, a playing field, and a swimming pool.

Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, approximately 82 percent of the School's operating income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Prep 1: $3,112; Prep 2: $3,112; Kdg.: $10,166; grades 1-5: $11,100; grades 6-8: $11,918; and grades 9-12: $12,348. A building fund certificate of $2,200 per year is levied on all students, as well as a one-time registration fee of $1,650 for all new students, except Prep 1 and Prep 2. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
