The International School, Manila, founded in 1920, is a private, nonsectarian, nonprofit day school for boys and girls from preschool through grade 12.
Organization: The School is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees elected for 3-year terms by parents.
Curriculum: The curriculum in elementary school is inquiry-based and challenges the students to be creative, independent thinkers. In the middle and high schools, the program is subject-based and culminates in courses leading to the IB diploma. The curriculum is under constant review to ensure that it reflects best practices from around the world. An ESL program is offered for students whose first language is other than English and whose English language competency falls below grade level. Learning support teachers throughout the School provide assistance and guidance to students in need. The foreign languages program includes Chinese, Filipino, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. The majority of graduating students proceed to colleges and universities in the United States, and the testing program reflects this fact. The School is approved by the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports in the Philippines and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Faculty: In school year 2008-2009, approximately 75% of the 192 faculty are expatriates, mainly from the United States (30%), United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In total, some twenty nationalities are represented among the faculty; approximately 11% of the teachers are Filipino citizens.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 1,852, including 503 North Americans; 331 host-country nationals, and 1,018 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 128 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees and 299 of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School operates on a new 7-hectare campus in Fort Bonifacio in the municipality of Taguig and was enhanced this year with the addition of a purpose-built preschool unit. Facilities include 3 air-conditioned gymnasia, a covered multipurpose court, 3 swimming pools, a floodlit all-weather artificial playing field and oval track, 2 additional grass playing fields, a canteen, a multilevel media center containing a total of 80,000 print and non-print resources, a 350-seat capacity Little Theater, and an 850-seat fully-equipped fine and performing arts theatre. All rooms, including the 200 classrooms, are air-conditioned.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, about 98% of the School's income derives from tuition and related fees. Annual tuition rates and related fees range from $6,583 to $18,105. A special project deposit of $5,000 is levied on all new students entering ECLC and above. This sum is fully refundable upon receipt of a written request and the return of the certificate of deposit, provided that the student withdraws from the School with proper clearance. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
