The Singapore American School is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from August 11 to December 19 and from January 12 to June 5.
Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member Board of Governors elected for 3-year terms by the parents of students enrolled at the School.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools. The School's testing program includes the College Board tests. Instruction is in English. French, Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin are taught as foreign languages. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States. The School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 363 (inclusive of 18 administrative staff members) full-time and 17 part-time staff members. The full-time faculty includes 241 U.S. citizens, 10 host-country nationals, and 112 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 3,747 (PS-12). Of the total, 2,551 were U.S. citizens, 187 were host-country nationals, and 1,009 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 218 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 2,333 were dependents of U.S. business and foundation employees and other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School is located on a 36-acre campus approximately 25-minute drive from downtown Singapore. New state-of-the-art facilities house 4 separate divisions, including the primary, intermediate, middle, and high schools. Each division has its own classrooms, library, offices, and support facilities. Support facilities include 5 air-conditioned gymnasiums; 2 outdoor covered play areas; 3 swimming pools; 3 cafeterias; 6 tennis courts; a 1,000-seat stadium; and track and field, baseball, softball, soccer, and rugby fields. Middle and high school facilities include modern science laboratories; computer facilities; a language lab; and classrooms for drafting, consumer life science, business, and applied technology. The campus also includes a variety of performing arts facilities, including an 800-seat auditorium, a 350-seat drama theater, and a 750-seat elementary theater, and designated classroom spaces for music, art, and drama. All facilities are fully air-conditioned.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year about 98.3 percent of the School's income derives from tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $7,166; PK: $10,749; Kdg.-grade 2: $14,331; grades 3-5: $14,331; grades 6-8: $15,584; and grades 9-12: $16,975. There is a registration fee of $6,957, payable upon first enrollment in the School, and an annual building surcharge of $2,087. These fees are payable in Singapore dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars at the exchange rate of $1.00 to S$1.4772.)
