The Tirana International School (TIS) is a private, non-profit Preschool – Grade 12 co-educational, American curriculum, college preparatory institution. TIS was founded in 1991 in order to provide a quality education for expatriates living in Tirana. The school year comprises 3 trimesters extending from early August 28 to June 19.
Organization: The School is governed by the Board of Directors of Quality Schools International, the membership of which is formed as set forth in the Bylaws of Quality Schools International. An Advisory Board, composed of 8 members who reside in Tirana and are appointed jointly by the president of Quality Schools International and the director of the Tirana International School, assists the School in its operation.
Curriculum: The School offers an outcome-based educational program with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools. Instruction, leading to individual mastery, takes advantage of small class sizes and the diverse educational backgrounds of the students. Advanced Placement courses are offered for secondary students. Instruction is in English. Non-English-speaking students are enrolled in an intensive English-as-a-Second-Language Program. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. TIS is the test center in Albania for the SAT and ACT.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 22 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members, including 13 U.S. citizens, 10 host-country nationals, and 6 third-country nationals. We also have 4 full time assistants.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 154 (grades PK-12). Of the total, 41 were U.S. citizens, 55 were host-country nationals and 58 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 16 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire and 25 of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School is located in converted residences inside a residential compound. 2-8 year old classes have their own small villa. The Middle School and Secondary students each have their own separate buildings. At the center of the campus is the media building, with library and computer labs above the cafeteria. They have an assembly hall with stage for plays and musical productions, two art rooms, a music room, a workshop, and science lab. The computer labs each have 30 networked computers, a video projector, scanner, digital camera, and. The library has a collection of more than 7,000 titles.
