The American International School in Vienna is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School also offers a post-graduate year. AISV was founded in 1959. The academic year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August through mid-January and from January to the beginning of June.
Organization: The school is governed by a 9-member Executive Board, 8 of whom are elected annually by the Parents' Association that sponsors the School and one is appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The School is incorporated under Austrian law and has been designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to U.S. college-preparatory private independent schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is also offered in a demanding two-year study in grades 11 and 12. A few supplementary Advanced Placement courses and the Austrian Matura are also offered. The School's testing program includes College Board and standardized achievement tests. Instruction is in English. German is required through grade 9 and French and Spanish are taught. The School is not staffed or equipped to educate children with serious learning problems, emotional or behavioral difficulties. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Education.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 78 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members, including 63 U.S. citizens, 9 host-country nationals, and 14 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 786 (PK-grade 5: 323; grades 6-8: 181; grades 9-12, 282). Of the total, 261 were U.S. citizens, 163 were host-country nationals, and 362 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 128 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees and 133 of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: Interconnected buildings house the three school divisions consisting of 66 classrooms, 2 libraries, 7 laboratories, 2 gymnasia, a sports hall, a cafeteria and a theatre. The total campus has 15 acres. An all-weather soccer field, track, and an elementary playground are among the outdoor facilities. A Middle School extension is scheduled for completion by January 2009.
