The Anglo-American School of Sofia is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from PK through grade 11 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1967. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 26 to January 22 and from January 23 to June 19.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board, 8 of whom are appointed by the American and British Ambassadors. The ninth member is the president of the Parent Teacher Organization. The Chairperson of the School Board isappointed by the American Ambassador. The Vice Chairperson is appointed by the British Ambassador.
Curriculum: The curriculum is a compilation of that of U.S. and British general academic schools, as well as best international schools’ practices. Instruction is in English. English-as-a-Second-Language is also offered, as are special education, French, Spanish, Bulgarian, physical education, art, music, computer science, and library. The School offers an extensive cocurricular program as well. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Council of International Schools and authorized by IBO.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 39 full-time and 3 part-time faculty members, including 19 U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 11 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 310 (PK-grade 11). Of the total, 47 were U.S. citizens, 71 were host-country nationals, and 192 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 23 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 6 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 18 of private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School has its own campus, which is situated on 70,000 sq.m. of land, located in the most scenic area outside the Sofia city center, with fabulous views of the mountains. Facilities include 15 full-size classrooms, 27 specialist/small group rooms, (ESL, Bulgarian cultural studies, Spanish, French, chemistry & biology rooms), a physical education gym, 5 music rooms, 2 large computer laboratories, a library, a fitness hall and dance room, a large art room, a cafeteria, faculty rooms, administrative offices and a school nurse’s office. Outside facilities include a standard size grass soccer field, a lower school grass soccer field, 2 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, a wide range of lower school playground facilities, an artificial lake, and a large internal car-parking area.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, the School's income derives almost exclusively from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: €4,245; Kdg.-grade 4: €12,405; and grades 5-8: €13,250 and grade 9-10: €14,050. The School also charges a registration fee of €720 (€365 for preschool) payable on first enrollment, an entrance capital fee of €1,130, a capital fee of €2,265 (€560 for preschool), and an optional busing fee of €1,166. These fees are payable in Euros. (All fees are quoted in Euros.)
