The American International School of Zagreb is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from junior kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1966. The school year consists of 4 terms, extending from August to June.
Organization: The School is governed by a 5-member School Board. The American Ambassador appoints the Chairperson of the Board and 2 additional members. The remaining 2 members of the Board are elected by the Parent/Teacher Association. The School director serves as ex-officio member of the Board. A staff representative is present at the Board meetings.
Curriculum: The curriculum is modeled after private, college-preparatory schools in the United States. Instruction is in English. English-as-a-Second-Language support is provided in the elementary and middle school. The full IB Diploma program is offered in the final two years of high school. All students who have completed the IB Diploma program have done very well. French and German are taught as foreign languages in all grades. Croatian culture is taught in grades 1-8 and Croatian language for native speakers is taught in grades 1-12. An intensive theater enrichment program is provided at the elementary school level. At the middle and high school levels, students have the opportunity to take drama classes which culminate in a public performance. After school enrichment activities are offered in areas such as Lego robotics, cooking, educational computer games, board games, strategy games, singing, quilting, home-work support, science activities, photography, and various sports. AISZ is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the European Council of International Schools, the Council of International Schools and the Central and Eastern European Schools Association.
Faculty: For the 2008-2009 school year, there are 36 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members, including 21 U.S. citizens, 20 host-country nationals, and 2 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 210 students from 35 different nationalities (Junior-Kindergarten.-grade 12). Of the total, 60 were U.S. citizens, 31 were host-country nationals and 119 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 30 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contact employees, 15 were dependents of U.S. business representatives, and 15 were dependents of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: AISZ occupies a leased building on Vocarska Street, with an adjoining playground area. Facilities include 21 classrooms, a library, 2 computer laboratories, an art studio, a science laboratory, a multipurpose room, workrooms and a cafeteria. The School also uses local facilities, including a gymnasium, theater, auditorium, swimming pool, ice rink and tennis courts when necessary and appropriate to enhance the program.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, the School’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Jr. Kdg.: Euro 4,650; Sr. Kdg.-grade 5: Euro 12,600; grades 6-8: Euro 13,200; and grades 9-12: Euro 13,600. There is an additional admission fee for all new students of Euro 400, and an annual capital fee of Euro 1,500. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars equivalent. Croatian nationals pay in kuna.
