The American International School of Vilnius is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from toddler through grade 10 for students of all nationalities. The School was established in 1993. The school year comprises 4 quarters extending from September 1 to mid June.
Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member School Board comprised of 5 members elected by the Parent School Association and 2 selected from the U.S. Embassy. The Ambassador or his/her designee serves as Board Chair.
Curriculum: The School offers a highly academic curriculum similar to that of U.S. academic, public schools. English is the language of instruction. In addition to core academic subjects, the School offers French, German, Lithuanian, computer, physical education, library, art, and music classes. Twice a week, students in Grades 4-10 are taken to a modern gymnasium for physical education. The School provides an after-school activities program on a weekly basis, and currently there are about 15 after-school and weekend activities offered. The School also has a student council. Average student-teacher ratio is 7:1. Classroom groupings are toddlers (2 years old); PK 3; PK 4; kindergarten; grade 1; grade 2: grade 3; grade 4, grade 5; grade 6; grades 7, grade 8; and grades 9-10.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 16 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members, including 8 U.S. citizens and 15 host-country nationals and 1 third country national.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 167 (Toddler group -grade 10). Of the total, 20 were U.S. citizens, 101 were host-country nationals, and 46 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 15 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees.
Facilities: The School is located on a small hill overlooking the historic Old Town of Vilnius, Subaciaus st. 41. The school facility has been renovated on a yearly basis since 1998 and consists of 15 classrooms, a computer laboratory, a library, and a small gymnasium. The library consists of more than 8,500 books, videos, and DVD’s. The computer laboratory is hooked to the Internet. For recess and physical education classes students have access to recently renovated playground and multi purpose sports court with plastic flooring.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Toddler group €1,050 - €2,620; Pre-K: €2,620 - €4,710; and Kdg. - grade 5: €14,700; grades 6-8: €16,000; and grades 9-10: €17,550. The School also charges a one-time application fee of €100-€250 for Toddler group: €250 for Pre-K and €500 for Kdg.-grade 10: These fees are payable in euros or Lithuanian litas. (All fees are quoted in euros.)
