The Verdala International School is an independent, coeducational day and boarding school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten (age 3) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters, extending from September to December and from January to June.
Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors, elected for one year terms by the Association of the Verdala International School. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on all parents of children enrolled in the School. The School is registered in Malta under the Verdala School Foundation as a non-profit organization and is licensed by the Ministry of Education in Malta.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools. Instruction is in English. The School offers the International Baccalaureate program. French, Italian, and Spanish are taught as foreign languages. The School offers English-as-a-Second-Language studies. Electives include art, music, drama, computing, and yearbook. The School's testing program includes the SAT I, SAT II, and I.G.C.S.E. Extracurricular activities include an art club, photography club, chess club, volleyball, basketball, soccer, drama, and sword-fencing. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 39 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members, including 3 U.S. citizens, 15 host-country nationals and 27 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 314 (PK-grade 5: 127; grades 6-8: 72; and grades 9-12: 115). Of the total, 23 were U.S. citizens, 35 host-country nationals, and 256 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 7 are dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 16 were dependents of private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: In September of 1987, the School relocated to a 6-acre site in a suburban setting. Facilities include 2 libraries, 3 computer laboratories and 4 science laboratories. There is access to a basketball court and a gymnasium.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, the School's income derives from tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $3,200; Kdg.-grade 5: $7,525; grades 6-8: $8,170; grades 9-10: $8,800; and grades 11-12: $8,965. There is a registration fee of $345 for playschool/prekindergarten and $1,300 for all other grades. These fees are billed in Maltese lira but payable in any convertible currency. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
