The QSI International School of Bratislava is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from age 2 (early childhood program) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1994. The school year is divided into 3 terms extending from late August to mid-December, from early January to late March, and from early April to mid-June.
Organization: The School is governed by the Board of Directors and Bylaws of Quality Schools International, a consortium of over 30 schools in Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East. An Advisory Board, composed of 6 to 10 members who reside in Bratislava, assists the School in its operation. The School operates with the approval of the Slovakian government.
Curriculum: The School offers a mastery educational program with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools. Instruction is in English. In addition to a rigorous academic program, the curriculum includes physical education, art, music, computer and drama. German, Slovak, and French are taught as foreign languages. Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate Diploma are available for secondary school students. In addition, the school seeks to provide students with an appreciation of the rich culture and history of Slovakia. Extracurricular activities are offered for students of all ages. The School participates in the cultural, sports, and professional development activities of the Central and Eastern European Schools Association. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and is recognized by the Slovakian Ministry of Education.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 41 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members, including 19 U.S. citizens, 14 host-country nationals, and 12 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 296 (preschool: 24; kdg.-grade 5: 111; grades 6-8: 70 and grades 9-12: 91). Of the total, 16 were U.S. citizens, 58 were host-country nationals, and 222 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 7 were dependents of U.S. government employees and 9 of other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School is located in Iuventa, a youth center pleasantly situated on a hill with expansive natural green spaces. QSIB provides 24-hour security with 2 guards on duty during the time students are in school. The Iuventa facility is a large 4 story complex, which has 31 classrooms, a library, 2 computer laboratories, 2 science laboratories, a playground, and offices. Other facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a fitness facility, dance and exercise rooms, a gymnasium, a outside sports field, a snack bar, a cafeteria. During the summer of 2005, the facilities were upgraded and the secondary chemistry and biology labs were completely renovated.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, 98% of the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $8,100; Kdg.: $13,500 (no capital funds fee); and grades 1-12: $16,300 with a non-refundable capital funds fee of $1,600 per student. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
