The American School of Barcelona (ASB) is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1962. The school year comprises 2 semesters, extending from early September to late June.

Organization: The School is owned by a parents' association and governed by an elected 9-parent Board of Directors.

Curriculum: The School’s educational program includes elements of both the U.S. and Spanish educational systems, and it also offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) in the last two years of high school. The School’s overall academic program is similar to that found in a U.S. college-preparatory school, with a focus on developing strong academic skills, problem-solving ability, critical thinking, and creativity. It also offers a robust program in host-country studies as well as the Spanish and Catalan languages. As in many international schools, students take many standardized tests including the International Schools Assessment (ISA), the PSAT, and the SAT. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Small group and individualized language instruction are offered in both Spanish and ELL for non-native speakers. ASB has specialists on staff for students with special needs as well as a full-time nurse. ASB has a full selection of after-school activities and cultural exchange programs.

Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are 85 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 674 (PK-K: 115; grades 1-5: 233; grades 6-8: 148; and grades 9-12: 178).

Facilities: Located in an attractive residential area just 15 minutes from the center of Barcelona, ASB overlooks the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The School is housed in 2 main buildings, that include classrooms, science laboratories, a media resource center, computer laboratories, art rooms, a music room, and a spacious modern lunch room with full kitchen. Physical Education facilities include 2 outdoor sports courts, a soccer field, and several playgrounds. The Early Childhood Center has its own self-contained facility with purpose-built play areas. .

Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, the School's income derives from regular day school tuition.
