2008-2009

The International School of Berne (ISB) is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten (age 3) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1961. The 2008-2009 school year comprises 3 terms extending from August 25 to December 19, from January 7 to April 8, and from April 20 to June 26.

Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors, composed of up to 9 members elected by the Parent Teachers Association. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.

Curriculum: ISB is one of only 137 IB schools worldwide which are authorized to offer all three prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs: the Primary Years Program (ages 3-11) begins in our Early Learning Center through to grade 5. The Middle Years Program (ages 11-16) is from grade 6 to grade 10. The Diploma Program (ages 16-19) in grades 11 and 12 is a comprehensive pre-university course recognized around the world as a premier University entrance qualification. The IB programs, taught in almost 2400 schools worldwide, ensure a smooth and easy transfer for ISBerne’s students to and from schools anywhere in the world. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the Council of International Schools. The school’s testing program includes the International Schools Achievement Tests in grades 3/5/7 and 9, the PSAT, and SAT. Instruction is in English. German and French are offered as foreign languages in grades K-12. English as an Additional Language is available for students whose first language is not English.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 39 full-time and 10 part-time, including 14 U.S. citizens, 2 host-country nationals, and 33 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 269 (PK-grade 12). Of the total, 43 were U.S. citizens, 36 host-country nationals, and 190 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 18 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees.

Facilities: The school sections, Early Leaning Center, Elementary, and Secondary, are on three sites, all within 200 meters of one another. Specialist areas in the school include a gymnasium, two ICT labs, three science labs, two art rooms, two libraries, a theatre arts rehearsal area, and music rooms. A well-organized playground and a sports field are also provided. Extensive use of local facilities for athletics, sports tournaments, and theatre and music productions enable the school to complement its program.

Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, the School's income derives almost totally from regular day school tuition fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $13,218; Kdg.-grade 1: $20,246; grades 2-5: $21,046; grades 6-8: $23,337; and grades 9-12: $26,228. There is an application fee of $227 and a one-time capital fund fee of $3,182 payable upon entry. These fees are payable in Swiss francs. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
