2007-2008

The International School of Berne is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten (age 3) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1961. The 2007-2008 school year comprises 3 terms extending from August 27 to December 21, from January 7 to March 20, and from April 7 to June 27.

Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors, composed of up to 9 members elected by the Parent Teachers Association. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.

Curriculum: The School's curriculum follows the International Baccalaureate Program. The IB Primary Years begins in our Early Learning Centre through to grade 5. The Middle Years Program is from grade 6 to grade 10. In grades 11 and 12 the students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The School's testing program includes the International Schools Achievement Tests in grades 3/5/7 and 9, the PSAT, and SAT. Instruction is in English. German and French are offered as foreign languages in grades K-12. English as an Additional Language is available for students whose first language is not English. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the Council of International Schools. We are proud to say we are an IB World School.

Faculty: In the 2007-2008 school year, there are 40 full-time and 7 part-time.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 285 (PK-grade 12).

Facilities: The main school facilities including the secondary school are located on a 11/2 acre site. The ELC is 200m from the main site and the elementary school is just across the road. Five modern, well-equipped buildings, including two libraries, a gymnasium, two art rooms, science laboratories, classrooms, and a learning resource center, comprise the central facility. A well-organized playground and a sports field are also provided.

Finances: In the 2007-2008 school year, the School's income derives almost totally from regular day school tuition fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $11,676; Kdg.-grade 1: $17,894; grades 2-5: $18,594; grades 6-8: $20,619; and grades 9-12: $23,176. There is an application fee of $210 and a one-time capital fund fee of $2,952 payable upon entry. There is no busing service. These fees are payable in Swiss francs. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
