The American International School/Dhaka (AIS/D) is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1972. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 14 to December 13 and from January 7 to June 5.

 

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member School Board elected for 2-year terms. The Board is comprised of parents or legal guardians of students enrolled in the School. The U.S. Ambassador appoints a non-voting representative to the Board. The School is not incorporated in the United States.

 

Curriculum: The academic program is reflective of a quality college preparatory, U.S. independent or suburban public school. Classes are self-contained through grade 5. Instruction is in English. Bangla and Spanish are taught as foreign languages starting in elementary school while French and Spanish are taught in middle school and high school. Specialist courses include English-as-a-Second-Language, physical education, computer, art, music, and South Asian studies. High school students can take a variety of Advanced Placement courses before they graduate.  AIS/D also offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma program for students in grades 11 and 12.  Strong sports, fine arts, and extracurricular programs are maintained. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.

 

Faculty: In the 2007-2008 school year, there are 85 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. A superintendent, 3 principals, 3 counselors, a business manager, and a facilities consultant make up the administrative team.

 

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 680 (PK-grade 5: 330; grades 6-8: 150; and grades 9-12: 200). 

 

Facilities: The School occupies a 4 1/2-acre campus in a residential suburb of Dhaka. The campus facility consists of 78 general classrooms, 6 science laboratories, 3 art studios, 2 music rooms, 2 drama rooms, 4 computer laboratories, a library/media center, 3 gymnasiums, a weight room, a heated pool, a 350-seat theatre, a cafeteria, and office suites. Sports facilities include two playgrounds and one athletic field. AIS/D maintains a fleet of air-conditioned buses for all student transportation.

Finances: In the 2007-2008 school year, 98% of the School's income derives from tuition.  Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK 3/4H: $4,940; PK4F: $7,380; Kdg.-grade 5: $13,020; grades 6-8: $16,030; and grades 9-12: $17,290. There is an admission processing fee of $50 for all and a registration fee of $3,450 for Kdg.-grade 12.  Additionally, an interest- bearing, fully refundable building bond of $1,000 must be purchased for each student. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
