The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1957. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 10 to December 16 and from January 10 to June 7.
Organization: The School is governed by a 10-member Board of Directors, elected annually. No more than 2 members can be of the same nationality. The Head of School is the chief administrator or executive officer.
Curriculum: The curriculum is from the International Baccalaureate Organization. Preschool-grade 5 follow the IB Primary Years Program, grades 6-10 follow the IB Middle Years Program, and grades 11-12 follow the IB Diploma Program. In grades 9-12, students gain credits towards the OSC high school diploma. In primary, OSC offers specialist courses in physical education (including swimming), music, art, drama, information technology, home nation, and French. Student services cover English-as-an-Additional-Language and Learning Support throughout the primary and middle schools. In middle school, students study English, French or Spanish, math, science, performing arts, drama, art, physical education (including swimming), technology, humanities, and personal and social education. In grade 10 students can choose French or Spanish, history or geography, drama, or art. All other subjects are studied as in middle school. In grades 11-12 students study English or French or beginner’s Spanish, math, science (1 or 2 from biology, chemistry, environmental systems, or physics), visual arts or theatre arts, geography or history or economics, physical education, and theory of knowledge. All these courses are IB courses and credit courses for the high school diploma.
Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are 51 full-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 400 (PS-grade 5: 179; and grades 6-12: 221).
Facilities: The School is located in a purpose-built facility on a 5-acre site near the parliamentary complex in the new administrative capital of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. It is equipped with 2 libraries, 3 art rooms, 4 science laboratories, 3 information technology centers, and a 400-seat auditorium. There are also special areas for a music and Black Box teaching studio. Sports facilities include a playing field, a 25-meter swimming pool, and a fully upgraded and redeveloped gymnasium.
Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $7,150; Kdg.: $10,830; grades 1-5: $13,540; grades 6-8: $14,580; grades 9-10: $16,770; and grades 11-12: $16,920. The School also charges a one-time nonrefundable registration fee of $1,250 for preschool; $4,850 for Kdg.-grade 12; a refundable deposit fee for PS-grade 5: $230 and grades 6-12: $460. These fees are payable in Sri Lankan rupees or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
