The American School of Brasilia is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from K-3 through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1964. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 8 to December 14 and from January 16 to June 13.
Organization: A Board of Directors, composed of at least 7 and at most 11 members with 2-year terms, governs the School. The Board is a self-perpetuating Board with a standing committee responsible for nominating and training prospective candidates. The U.S. Ambassador appoints 1 member. Membership in the Association is conferred to parents who elect to pay the annual association fee. The School is administered by a headmaster, two principals, a director of Brazilian Studies, and a director of curriculum. The School is recognized and registered as tax-exempt in Brazil and in the United States.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory school including Advanced Placement courses. Instruction is in English and all students are enrolled in the American Diploma program. Courses in the fine arts, performing arts and in computer, along with extracurricular activities, complete the well-rounded curriculum. The School is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There is an extensive co-curricular program with up to 35 different athletic teams, clubs and other activities. There is also a high school Leadership Theory and practicum program. The entire school participates in service programs.
Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 65 full-time teachers, including 35 U.S. citizens, and 30 host country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 516 (PK-grade 5: 285; and grades 6-12: 231). Of the total, 95 were U.S. citizens, 299 were host country nationals, and 122 were third country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 64 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 31 were other private U.S. citizens. A total of 51 students receive full scholarships.
Facilities: The School occupies a 5-acre campus with a panoramic view of Lake Paranoa. There are several interconnected building containing 45 classrooms, 3 science laboratories, 3 computer laboratories, a library, and a Center for the Arts. A cafeteria and a separate snack bar provide lunch and snacks after school. A regulation soccer field, a fully equipped gymnasium, an additional covered basketball court, two outdoor courts and two elementary playgrounds enhance the physical plant facilities.
Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, about 95% of the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: K-3 & K-4 (1/2 day): $5,459; K3 & K-4 (full day): $9,098; K-5 to grade 5: $14,607; grades 6-12: $17,531. For Grades K-5 to 12, there is an annual association fee of $10,196 and a one-time capital fee of $7,843. For Grades K-3 to 12, there is a nonrefundable application fee of $78. (All the fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
