2011-2012

The American School of Brasilia is a private, coeducational day school founded in 1964. It offers an educational program from K-3 through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 4 to December 16 and from January 19 to June 13.

Organization: A Board of Directors, composed of at least 7 and at most 11 members with 2-year terms, governs the School. The board is self-perpetuating, with a standing committee responsible for nominating and training prospective candidates. Membership in the association is conferred to parents who elect to pay the annual association fee. The School is administered by a headmaster, two principals, a director of Brazilian studies, a director of curriculum, and a business director. The School is recognized and registered as tax-exempt in Brazil and in the United States.

Curriculum: The American School of Brasilia provides (3) Diploma Programs: U.S., Brazilian, and IB (High School) all accredited through a K3-Grade 12 program based on a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum taught in English to students of all nationalities. EAB strives to produce life-long learners who integrate the Five Pillars of Learning throughout their time at EAB: Academics, Activities, Service, Leadership, and Arts so as to nurture responsible, successful, and contributing citizens in a complex and rapidly changing global society. Challenged to think creatively and critically, to communicate openly, to strive for excellence, and to grow academically and socially, our atmosphere fosters honesty and integrity as students develop their self-worth and potential.

Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are 70 full-time teachers.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 568 (PK-grade 5: 299; and grades 6-12: 269).

Facilities: The School occupies a 5-acre campus with a panoramic view of Lake Paranoa. There are several interconnected buildings containing 45 classrooms, 4 science laboratories, 4 computer laboratories, a library, and a center for the arts. A cafeteria and a separate snack bar provide lunch and snacks after school. An official size soccer field, a fully equipped gymnasium, an additional covered basketball court, two outdoor courts and two elementary playgrounds enhance the physical plant facilities.

Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, about 95% of the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: K3-K4 (full day): $14,154; K5-grade 5: $21,629; grades 6-12: $25,440. For K5-grade 12, there is an annual association fee of $15,264 and a one-time capital fee of $12,211. For K3-grade 12, there is a nonrefundable application fee of $132. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars). Payment must be in current currency. Exchange rate used is U.S.$1=R$1.6566).
