The American International School of Kingston, founded in 1994, is a private, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from late August to mid-January and from early mid-January to early June. AISP is an IB World School.
Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors including one ex-officio member (U.S. Ambassador or his/her designee). Of the remaining 8 directors, 6 are elected by the members of the association and 2 are appointed by the Board. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of the children enrolled in the School. The School currently posseses tax-exempt status in the United States and in Jamaica.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory globally-focused school. Instruction is in English. There is no religious instruction. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is offered in grades eleven and twelve. It is expected that all graduates will go on to colleges and universities in the United States, Europe, and Canada. The School offers English-as-a-Second-Language.
Faculty: In the 2011-2012 school year, there are 45 full-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, enrollment was 294.
Facilities: The School has 32 classrooms, 16 in the lower school and 16 in the upper school including 4 science labs, a MacIntosh computer lab and help desk, a library, 2 music rooms, 2 art rooms, a dance studio, café/canteen, and an administration office. Sports facilities include a full football (soccer) field, two tennis courts, basketball court, an elementary playground, tetherball, and four square. The School is located 10 minutes from the center of New Kingston and 5 minutes from the U.S. Embassy.
Finances: In the 2011-2012 school year, the School’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: preschool: $4,800; PK-kdg.: $6,800; grades 1-5: $12,200; grades 6-8: $13,700, grades 9-12: $15,000. New students pay a one-time nonrefundable registration fee according to the following schedule: first child of family: $4,500; second child of family: $3,700; and third child of family: $2,600. There is also a $1,500 Capitalization Fee per student per year – this fee is different for U.S. Embassy employees. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
