Colegio Jorge Washington is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from nursery through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. English language instruction begins in prekindergarten as a program of instruction for children with little or no English language capability. The School was founded in 1952. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from early August until mid-December and from mid-January to mid-June.

Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors elected to 2-year terms by the Colegio Jorge Washington Parents Association, which sponsors the school. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory school. Instruction is in English and Spanish. A dual program prepares students for both the U.S. High School Diploma and the Colombian Bachillerato degree. The School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Colombian Ministry of Education. Graduation rate is 100% and students go on to colleges and universities in the United States, Colombia, and Europe.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are 63 full-time faculty members, including 23 U.S. or Canadian citizens, 38 host-country nationals, and 2 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 654 (Nursery: 48; PK-Kdg: 90; grades

1-5: 213; grades 6-12: 303). Of the total, 49 were U.S. citizens, and 605 were host-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 40 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees and 9 of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: Facilities include a mini-campus with playground and computer lab for the maternity-kindergarten; 3 independent, self-contained buildings for grades 1-2; a main 4-story building providing classrooms for grades 3-12; an additional building for fine arts, an independent music department/house, a fully furnished science laboratory; a multi-use library; 1 large, 1 medium, and 2 small computer labs; and a learning center for children with diagnosed learning disabilities. The school is currently in the process of constructing a new 20-acre campus, located just outside of the city, which will increase the school’s capacity to 900 students within the next ten years. The new campus will be finished and occupied by August 2009.

Finances: In the 2007-2008 school year, approximately 97% of the School’s income derives from tuition and other fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Nursery: $2,472; and PK-grade 12; $5,530. An additional donation based on an average of $670 per grade is required. School fees are payable in Colombian pesos. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
