The QSI International School of Chengdu is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten (3-year-olds) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 2002. The school year comprises 5 quintiles extending from September to June. A very active parent support group works with the administration and teachers to provide volunteers and special activities throughout the year.
Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 3 to 7 members who are selected and appointed by a committee made up of the founders of Quality Schools International and at least one other member of the Board of Directors of Quality Schools International. An Advisory Board of 6 to 10 persons living in Chengdu assists the School in its operation. The School operates with the approval of the Chinese Government.
Curriculum: The School offers a performance-based/mastery learning approach to education with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools. Instruction, leading to individual mastery, takes advantage of small class sizes and the diverse educational backgrounds of the students. Instruction is in English with Chinese offered as a language. Currently six AP courses are taught in the secondary school, including AP Chinese, Calculus, Biology, World History, Language, and European History.
Faculty: In the 2009-2010 school year, there are 18 full-time Western-trained and -certified teachers. There are also 10 teaching assistants, including 5 host-country nationals who teach Chinese and music.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, enrollment was 125 (PK: 20; Age 5-grade 5: 70; grades 6-8: 28; and grades 9-12: 7).
Facilities: The School occupies a purpose-built school just off the third ring road in southern Chengdu. Facilities include 15 classrooms with computers, a computer laboratory with 22 instructional computers, a library with 10,000 volumes, a science laboratory, a music room, a multipurpose room, and an outdoor play/sports area.
Finances: In the 2009-2010 school year, the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $6,100; and Age 5-grade 12: $17,100. An annual capital fund fee of $1,600 per student is required. There is a one-time registration fee of $300. The bus fee is $1,300 per year. Lunch fees are based on student age and range from $2 - $3 per meal. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars wired to a US bank or paid locally in RMB. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
