OS provides technical and grant assistance to meet the educational needs of school-age dependents of U.S. Government personnel and other Americans assigned to newly established U.S. missions as well as to posts with a growing American presence. OS has provided assistance to three schools, one established in 2005, and two that opened in September 2007.

India, Kolkata: The American School Kolkata (graded K-2) opened in September 2007. Under the bilateral agreement between the governments of India and the United States, the school was established to enable U.S. children and third-country children meeting the criteria established by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to be taught using American curriculum standards.
