MATHCOUNTS Program
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students that increases enthusiasm for and enhances achievement in middle school mathematics. It is comparable to an Olympic event, where each year 228 students representing the best and brightest from schools all over the U.S. and its territories, the Department of Defense schools and Department-assisted overseas schools earn the honor of participating in the National Competition held in May.
MATHCOUNTS starts the school year by distributing a free copy of the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook, containing 100 creative problems which can be incorporated into a school's curriculum or used as an extracurricular activity. These problems meet the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards for grades 6 to 8. New this year, MATHCOUNTS is expanding with the addition of a Club Program, which provides teachers with structured activities for students in math club meetings.
The MATHCOUNTS coaching sessions begin in the fall and involve more that 500,000 students and 6,300 schools. Students then participate in the local, chapter and state competitions from January through March. The top four student scorers in the MATHCOUNTS State Competitions from Department-assisted overseas schools are selected to represent the Department of State at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition. The coach of the top scorer is selected as the Team Coach. These four students and the team coach receive an all-expense paid trip to compete in the National competition.
Lockheed Martin hosted the 24th annual MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Fort Worth, Texas from May 10 to May 13, 2007. The Department of State MATHCOUNTS team was represented by: Justin Cho and Kevin Liou (Taipei American School, Taiwan), Smriti Sridhar (International School Manila, Philippines), and Minjae Lee (Singapore American School, Singapore, Republic of Singapore), The Team Coach was Esther Wong from the Taipei American School.
