The International School Suva is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities.  The school year comprises 4 terms extending from late January to early December.

 

Organization:  The School is governed by a 15-member School Council.  The School is owned and operated by the International Schools Association which was formed in 1972.  The members, 11 of whom are elected and 2 of whom are appointed, and 1 ex officio, serve 3-year terms.

 

Curriculum:  The School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (grades K-5), IB Middle Years Program (grades 6-10), the IGCSE (grades 9-10) and the IB Diploma Program (grades 11-12), and the ACT (Australia) curriculum (grades 11-12).  The curriculum also draws on instructional materials from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.  French, Korean and Chinese are offered as foreign languages, and students are required to take Fijian Studies Hindi from Early Childhood to year 3 and Chinese in grades 4 and 5.  The School has a limited program for students who are learning disabled and has on staff a speech pathologist and counselor to conduct testing.  Students may participate in a full range of sports and other extracurricular activities.  Ninety percent of the graduates go on to college and university study.  The School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the International Baccalaureate Organization, and the Fiji Ministry of Education.

 

Faculty:  In the 2008-2009 year, there are 56 full-time faculty members, including 30 host-country nationals, and 26 third-country nationals, 1 of whom is a US citizen.  There are 8 part-time teachers, including 2 host-country national and 6 third-country nationals.

 

Enrollment:  At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 480 (grades K-12), including 13 U.S. citizens, 118 host-country nationals, and 349 third-country nationals.  Of the U.S. enrollment, 6 students were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire and contract employees, and 7 of private U.S. citizens.

 

FacilitiesThe Primary School resources include a computer room with a network of IBM computers, a music room, an ESL room, and a learning support room. There are three networked computer labs in the Secondary School, a music room, an art room, an ESL room, a tech drawing room, a design room, a food/fabrics tech room, and 3 science labs. A new library which is situated in the secondary section is shared between the Primary and Secondary. In the Secondary there is also a middle school area of four classrooms which have home-based classes. There are two hard courts for basketball and netball, and the School has access to the oval next to the School.   A new multipurpose hall and fitness center for all indoor sports, drama, music, fitness, and assemblies was officially opened on 19th November 2007.  There is an undercover assembly area in the Primary School.

 

Finances:  In the 2008-2009 school year, the School's income derives from tuition.  Annual tuition rates are as follows: Playgroup: $296; Headstart: $991; Early Childhood I: $2,659; Early Childhood II: $4,221; reception - grade 2: $6,212; grades 3-4: $6,330; grade 5: $6,341; grades 6-7: $8,707; grade 8: $10,061; grade 9: $10,514; grade 10: $10,533; and grades 11-12: $11,257.  (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
