2008-2009

The American School Kolkata (ASK) is a new international elementary school, founded in 2007, offering an American curriculum program for the elementary grades. ASK offers a U.S.-style educational program for American and international students who are temporarily resident in India.ASK has been established with the support of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools, the U.S. Embassy New Delhi, and the American Embassy School, New Delhi.

Organization: The School is governed by the Board of Directors of the American Embassy School, New Delhi. There is an Advisory Board that is composed of the U.S. Consul General, the Management Officer, two parent members, and the Head Teacher (in a non-voting capacity).

Curriculum: The curriculum follows an American curriculum in conjunction with the American Embassy School. Instruction is in English, and the majority of materials are imported from the United States. Core subjects include language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies in the elementary grades. There are also specialized classes for art, health and PE, swimming, yoga, music, technology, and Indian Studies.

Faculty: In the 2008-2009 school year, there are two full-time faculty members. The head teacher has an advanced degree, and the second teacher has a qualified teaching degree. The teacher student ratio is 2 teachers to 7 students.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, enrollment was 7, representing 3 nationalities. Of the total, 3 were U.S. citizens, and 4 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 1 was the child of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 2 are from a family living here on sabbatical leave from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Facilities: The main classroom includes teaching space, a library, computer laboratory, and storage/kitchen facilities. The classroom is air-conditioned. The students at ASK have access to a 10-meter pool and an extensive play area.

Finances: In the 2008-2009 school year, annual tuition rates are as follows: Kdg.-grade 2: $13,500. There is a one-time application fee of $200 for new students. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
