AERO:SBC (Standards-Based Curriculum)
at the Potomac School
Visual ArtsCurriculum Design Institute
June 22-27, 2008
The audience for this week-long institute is teachers who would like to gain experience in standards-based curriculum design. The work will be based on the standards developed by Project AERO. The AERO Visual Arts standards are high quality, innovative, challenging and professionally validated and were developed by practitioners representing eight American/International schools from around the world.
This workshop is intended for those with a beginning or moderate level of experience in teaching art. Participants will become familiar with the standards and, using a backward design model, work to develop units of instruction. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring samples of units or curriculum maps with them which they would like to review and/or revise. An expectation is that participants will submit completed units for collaborative review and for sharing through the AERO web site.
The workshop will include:
- The relationship of standards and benchmarks to curriculum
- Distribution and review of the AERO Visual Arts Standards
- Instruction on the principles of backward design, including effective instructional strategies and assessment
- Development of a unit using the backward design process
- Time with team members to plan for using the process at home schools
Participants may choose to take this course for university credit and apply this credit to the AERO Certificate in Curriculum through SUNY Buffalo. Applications will be available in the spring. For course participants earning university credit, the cost is $500.00. For those not choosing to earn university credit, there is no charge.
The workshop will be limited to 20 participants. Therefore, as in previous years, registration will be accepted on a space-available basis. If possible, interested schools are asked to commit to sending a team of teachers. Since this may not be possible for all schools, individual applications will be considered as well.
Please send or fax the completed registration form by March 14, 2008 to:
