CANDIDATE: James Peter Zumwalt

James Peter Zumwalt, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Japan and Korea, Bureau of East Asian and the Pacific Affairs in the Department of State. He has served in leadership positions at challenging posts abroad and in senior policy-making positions domestically. As DCM and Chargé in Tokyo he led the inter-agency team that managed the U.S. emergency response to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. During his 32-year career as an Economic Officer, Mr. Zumwalt has built strong credentials for inter-agency management, team-building and mentoring of subordinates.

Previously, Mr. Zumwalt served the Department of State as Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy Tokyo, Japan (2008-2011), Director, Office of Japanese Affairs (2006-2008), Economic Minister, Embassy Tokyo, Japan (2004-2006), Economic Counselor, Embassy Tokyo, Japan (2002-2003), Economic Counselor, Embassy Beijing, China (2001-2002), Economic Officer, Embassy Beijing, China (1999-2001), Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (1994-1996), Economic Unit Chief, Office of Korean Affairs (1993-1994), Economic Officer, Embassy Tokyo, Japan (1989-1993), Political Officer, Office of Philippine Affairs (1987-1989), Staff Assistant, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (1986-1987), Detailee to the Office of Japan and China, U.S. Trade Representative (1986), Vice Consul, Consulate General Osaka-Kobe, Kobe, Japan (1983-1985) and Economic Officer, Embassy Kinshasa, Zaire (1981-1983).

Mr. Zumwalt earned a B.A. in History and Japanese at the University of California, Berkeley in 1979 and a M.S. in National Security Strategy at the National War College, Washington, D.C. in 1997. He is the recipient of a Presidential Meritorious Service Award (2013), Runner-up DCM of the Year (2011), Lifetime Honorary Member, American Chamber of Commerce Japan (2011), four Senior Foreign Service Performance Awards, four Superior Honor Awards, and the Herbert Salzman Award for Outstanding International Economic Achievement. He speaks Japanese, Chinese and French.
